Class Description

Students in this class will take a field trip on Wednesday, October 9 at 7:00 PM to see the full production of Macbeth performed by Shakespeare in the Park, a professional theatre located in Coppell. Families are invited! Tickets will range from $10-$15 per person and will be ordered the second week of class.

Widely considered as one of Shakespeare’s four great tragedies (Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth), the themes illustrated in the William Shakespeare’s Macbeth include ambition, fate, deception, and treachery. The great Scottish general Macbeth returns home victorious from a war between Scotland and Norway. To reward him, the Scottish king, Duncan, decides that he will confer the title of the traitorous Cawdor on the heroic Macbeth. Macbeth, and another general named Banquo, happen upon the three witches. The witches predict that Macbeth will one day become king.

After hearing the prophecy, Macbeth decides that he will murder Duncan. Macbeth's wife agrees to his plan and assists him, framing the sleeping guards for the crime. The crown passes to Macbeth, as was prophesied, but more deaths and lies become necessary to hide the truth.  In the end, Macbeth and his wife also die, undone by their own choices and human weakness.

Middle and high school students will use a shortened student version of this classic play to learn and to perform. In addition to coming to understand the plot and language of Macbeth, they will learn acting, voice, articulation, movement, and stage presence, all in the context of learning lines, playing roles, and preparing for performance. The semester will end in a staged show for friends and family!
