NEVER AFTER HAPPILY

Ms. Sorrel

Middle School & High School Acting Class & Play Lab

Ages 11+

Mondays, February 3-May 22

3:15-5:00 PM

  • Welcome to an enchanted kingdom where all your favorite fairy tale characters have come to retell their stories in fun and unique ways and—NOPE! Scratch that, we’re not doin’ that!

We’ve all heard these stories a bazillion times, and Ella ain’t havin’ it. She’s tired of the false promises of “happily ever after” that never come true in the real world. Ella’s not retelling these stories—she's just writing what happens AFTER the endings, where reality collides with fairy tales in very messy ways. Now, Cinderella and the entire kingdom are rocked as these ingénues and princes try to deal with life after that perfect moment. Part farce, part vaudeville, and a totally wild ride that no one ever imagined after “happily ever after.”

Middle and High School students in this play will use this creative script to learn all about theatre, in the context of a preparing a staged performance and learning about “greats” of literature and drama. Acting and script analysis skills will be emphasized throughout the semester and all students will have opportunities to shine on stage. Students will also engage in projects that emphasize directing and producing skills. The semester will end in a free showcase production AND a free Student-Directed Scenes project for friends and family.

  • Stage management is the art and practice of organizing and coordinating a theatrical production. Stage managers are the critical, but invisible glue that brings every well-produced show together! This hands-on class will teach you about the core responsibilities of stage managers and how their position fits into the overall plan for a production. Learn terminology and how to build the production book, create reports and worksheets, arrange and efficiently manage a backstage area, call light and sound cues, communicate with cast families and different departments, and direct actors and a backstage crew. Examine the art of working with actors, directors, technical directors, set and costume designers, and house management to bring a theatrical vision to life on stage.

If you are interested in stage managing a camp or a mainstage production, this class is for you!

  • Important Note for ACT Teens Who Want to Stage Manage:

In order to be considered for a stage management position at The ACT, you must be fully trained in all aspects of the position. This class provides that required and essential training, which must be completed before your application to stage manage can be considered.
